Skin Minimalism: Why I’m Choosing Simple Over the 10-Step Trend at 27

At 27, I look around at skincare trends and see people juggling ten different products, actives, and expensive serums every single day. The internet makes it feel like if you aren’t layering half a dozen bottles before bed, you aren’t really taking care of yourself. But honestly? My routine has been pretty much the same for years: a simple moisturizer, vitamin C, and SPF. And my skin is doing just fine.

The “More is Better” Trap

We are living in an era of skincare saturation. Every week, a new “must-have” ingredient pops up, and suddenly everyone is convinced their skin is dull, dehydrated, or aging prematurely if they don’t add it to their vanity shelf. I watch people stress over their routines, constantly buying and testing new things. It makes me wonder: have we collectively decided that our skin is a project that needs constant fixing?

I’ve always been a bit skeptical of this “more is better” approach. I’ve never felt the need to turn my bathroom into a chemistry lab, but I’m starting to question if my simplicity is actually keeping me from better results, or if I’m just avoiding the marketing noise.

The Pressure of Hitting 30

There is a massive amount of pressure to start using “heavy-duty” ingredients the moment you approach your 30s. Everyone talks about retinoids and potent acids as if they are a rite of passage. I find myself asking: is this genuine progress for our skin health, or is it just the industry pushing us toward more products?

I’m genuinely curious if there’s a middle ground. Can we really achieve long-term skin health with a basic routine, or am I just being naive about what my skin will need in the next few years? I’ve seen so many people claim that adding more actives changed their lives, but I’ve also seen just as many end up with damaged barriers from over-treating their skin.

Let’s Talk About It

I’m really not sure if I’m onto something with my minimalist approach or if I’m just missing out on the “real” skincare benefits everyone talks about.

So, I’m curious to hear your take: Do you think a complex routine is actually necessary for long-term results, or do you feel like we’re being fed a lot of unnecessary hype? Are you team “simple” or team “give me all the actives”? I’d love to hear your honest thoughts.
